Travel Cots

This is a personal update – not posted as my capacity as FBOA Secretary.

Members may be aware that on Sunday there was a large police and ambulance presence. This was called to one of the properties I look after on The Bay.

Tragically a baby died in its sleep overnight. As previously posted I am grateful to Michaela and the onsite team for supporting what was a tragic and horrible event to happen to anyone let alone when miles from home and on the day they were leaving their holiday.

What I will share though is it has brought into context the legalities around cots and whose responsibility it is. I thought I would share this with you for information. Although we have no reason to think it was the fault of the cot and this was a tragic cot death.

In a holiday cottage, the responsibility for a travel cot typically rests with the holiday cottage owner, but it’s also important for the guest to be aware of their own responsibilities regarding its use. 

Here’s a breakdown of the responsibilities:

Holiday Cottage Owner:

• Provision and Maintenance:
  The owner is responsible for providing the travel cot, ensuring it’s in good condition and safe for use. 
• Duty of Care:
  Owners have a general duty of care to ensure the safety of their guests, including the safe use of provided equipment like travel cots. 
• Compliance with Regulations:
  Owners need to be aware of and comply with any relevant health and safety regulations for holiday lets. 

Holiday Cottage Guest:

• Supervision:
  Guests are responsible for supervising children using the travel cot at all times. 
• Familiarization:
  Guests should familiarize themselves with how to operate the travel cot and ensure it’s safe for their child. 
• Bringing Bedding:
  Some owners may only provide a bottom sheet, requiring guests to bring their own cot bedding and mattress. 

•   Safe Use:
Guests should use the travel cot responsibly and ensure it’s not used in a way that could cause harm to themselves or their children.
